PETOSKEY — David Shuman’s Petoskey real estate office opened less than three months ago, but his familiarity with the Northern Michigan market extends back for years.
Shuman is principal broker for Bay North Realty, which opened in January at 445 Michigan St., Suite 2. Joining him in the venture is his wife, Sarah, who brings a marketing focus to the operation.
Before launching Bay North, David Shuman spent about eight years as a real estate sales associate at Real Estate One of Petoskey, and obtained some experience in the banking field prior to that. Shuman said the idea of launching his own brokerage was something that had interested him for some time.
Based on his work experience, along with the marketplace familiarity he has obtained during 12 years as a local resident, Shuman believes he’s well-positioned to tackle three key functions of a real estate brokerage: helping prospective buyers find a home or other property, helping prospective sellers achieve a sale and helping clients navigate the closing process.
“Being independent, we have intentionally set ourselves up with a low cost structure,” Shuman said, adding that Bay North plans to put a high priority on marketing efforts.
While residential properties are a primary focus for Bay North, Shuman noted that the office also has a few clients on the commercial side.
The broker expects to handle listings mainly within a 45-minute drive of Petoskey, but can consider those farther away on a case-by-case basis. Bay North is affiliated with the Emmet Association of Realtors, and can also work with real estate groups in neighboring counties to aid clients in their property searches.
Sarah Shuman worked with her husband on real estate marketing for several years before the couple launched an office of their own, and she continues to provide marketing services for external clients as well.
Both Shumans have master’s degrees in business administration, with David’s earned at Wayne State University and Sarah’s at the University of Michigan. The couple reside in Petoskey and have two children.
Bay North Realty’s normal office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, with availability to work with clients during evenings and weekends as well. The real estate office has a website at www.baynorthrealty.com and can be reached by phone at (231) 360-9149.
